02. General information
Tea tree oil is mainly distilled from the native Australian plant Melaleuca Alternifolia. It is very well-known for its powerful antiseptic properties that make it one of the best antibacterial essential oils. Scientific research published in Clinical Microbiology Reviews clearly show the broad-spectrum activity of tea tree oil thanks to its antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties.
This means that tea tree oil is an excellent adjuvant in the treatment of numerous infections, and can relieve congestion or irritation of the respiratory tract. Laboratory studies show that tea tree oil has the ability to fight the relapsing herpes virus (which causes cold sores) and the flu symptoms. The antiviral activity of tea tree oil has been attributed to the presence of terpinen-4-ol and 1.8 cineole, which are its main active components.
