Star anise (Illicium verum) is a well-known spice with beneficial properties, used both in cooking and as a natural remedy. It is renowned for its digestive, antispasmodic, and carminative properties, thanks to its high content of anethole, triterpenes, and flavonoids.

Star anise essential oil is indeed rich in anethole, which makes up 86-93% of the oil content. According to scientific literature, anethole is a bioactive compound recognized for its digestive and carminative properties, as well as for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities.

The presence of estragole (0.5-6%) adds further benefits, contributing to the comprehensive therapeutic profile of the product.

Star anise-based supplements are appreciated for these properties, but they also have some limitations. Often, the bioavailability of the active ingredients is reduced due to rapid metabolism and degradation in the gastric environment, leading to a decrease in therapeutic effectiveness. However, IPS offers an innovative solution to overcome these limitations: dry microcapsules containing star anise essential oil.

The polymeric membrane surrounding the oil is the key to the gastroresistance of such microcapsules. Thanks to it, availability increases, and there is no degradation in the gastric environment. Additionally, microencapsulation technology allows for controlled and sustained release of the active ingredient directly into the gastrointestinal tract, where its therapeutic efficacy is highest.

Microcapsules containing star anise essential oil are suitable for formulations such as hard capsules and dispersible single-dose sachets. Their particle size ranges from 100 to 600 μm, with an oil content of up to 85%. This ensures a high concentration of active ingredients per dose and, therefore, better results.
