Bioavailability of microencapsulated supplements

When we talk about a drug or supplement’s bioavailability we are referring to the speed with which a particular active ingredient is absorbed into an organism. This parameter is important as it helps us to understand the effectiveness of a food supplement or nutraceutical and can vary depending on numerous factors.

The microcapsules developed by IPS are studied with the goal of maximising their bioavailability, which is fundamental if an active ingredient is to reach where it needs to be within the time demands.

The bioavailability of a food supplement depends on its formulation and, in particular, on its ability to cross the gastrointestinal tract without being damaged. In fact, the problem encountered in most classic supplements is an inability to withstand the pH value of the intestinal wall. Consequently, the active ingredient’s lifespan proves insufficient as it cannot therefore be absorbed properly into the organism.

Thanks to a technique known as microencapsulation by coacervation, IPS is able to offer microcapsules coated in a gastroresistant membrane, able to carry the active ingredient directly to the intestinal tract. Here the substance can be released at a fixed rate, thus guaranteeing a greater effectiveness of the product.

The bioavailability of a supplement not only depends on the quality of the product, but also on the characteristics of the consumer. Factors like age, sex and diseases influence the bioavailability of a substance considerably and often turn out to be a barrier in the production of effective supplements. However, microencapsulation has allowed this obstacle to be overcome, allowing for a production of supplements that are tailored to every requirement.
