Microcapsules of Ginger for the production of food supplements

Ginger is a plant of Asian origin with countless properties and benefits for the body. In particular, this herbaceous plant belongs to the family of Zingiberaceae and has long been an excellent tool used to combat inflammations and gastrointestinal problems. These beneficial properties derive mainly from two of its active ingredients: Gingerols and Shogaols.

Dry ginger-based microcapsules provided by IPS enable the benefits of these active ingredients to be better harnessed, thus obtaining a high-quality product providing extremely beneficial results for consumers.  The FLOWACTIVES ® microcapsules are developed through microencapsulation by coacervation, a process that allows incorporating the raw material into a thin polymeric membrane.

This membrane, in addition to protecting and stabilising the active ingredient, allows the encapsulation of said active ingredient with a concentration of up to 87%. Dry microcapsules of ginger essential oils are specifically studied for the protection of the active ingredient from direct oxidising agents as well as to favour the arrival of the active ingredient to the intestines, thus increasing the therapeutic efficacy and avoiding possible gastric inflammation.

Supplements made with microcapsules of ginger essential oils offer another huge advantage over classic supplements: masking odours and flavours. It is well known that ginger has a pungent flavour, which is why many consumers find it difficult to take it on a regular basis. The microcapsules contain a physical barrier that reduces the direct contact of the oil with the taste buds, while maintaining the pharmacodynamic properties of the active constituents.

Ginger microcapsules can be added to solid oral formulations such as hard capsules, or single-dose, dispersible or orodispersible sachets, as well as used in combination with other active ingredients. In this way, anyone can benefit from the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antihypertensive and antithrombotic properties of ginger essential oil.
