Maximized absorption of microencapsulated nutraceutical ingredients

The effectiveness of nutraceuticals is not only measured by the quality and purity of the compounds used but also by their ability to be effectively absorbed by the body. A recurring problem in the dietary supplement industry is the insufficient availability of active ingredients, which can result in reduced therapeutic efficacy and a negative perception of the product by consumers.

With the aim of overcoming these issues, IPS has successfully developed a more than innovative solution: microencapsulated nutraceutical ingredients.

The microencapsulation process allows the active ingredient to be encapsulated within a biocompatible polymer matrix that acts as a protective barrier against the harsh gastrointestinal environment. The integrity of the nutrient is preserved until it reaches regions of the intestinal tract where absorption is optimal. For example, some compounds are optimally absorbed only in the small intestine, where the presence of specific transporters facilitates their entry into the systemic circulation.

Microcapsule technology allows for controlled or site-specific release, which can be designed to activate in response to environmental variables such as pH or the presence of specific enzymes. This ensures that the active ingredient is released under ideal conditions for its absorption, maximizing the effectiveness of the finished product. The protection offered by microencapsulation also extends the shelf life of the active ingredient, shielding it from light, oxygen, and moisture.

But that’s not all. The homogeneous diffusion of microcapsules in the gastrointestinal tract avoids concentration peaks that could reduce the product's efficacy or increase the risk of side effects. This feature is particularly relevant for nutraceuticals that operate on dose-dependent mechanisms of action.

We can therefore affirm that microencapsulated ingredients improve the effectiveness of dietary supplements while also contributing to building consumer trust in the products. Companies will thus be able to stand out in a competitive market by offering products capable of meeting and exceeding consumer expectations in terms of efficacy and safety.
