Microencapsulation with gastroresistant membranes to improve bioavailability of active ingredients

The most common method for the administration of dietary and nutraceutical supplements is orally. However, not all active substances are suitable for this method as they can cause irritation in the gastrointestinal mucosa.

In addition, some of these substances lose their benefits when they come into contact with the acidic pH of gastric juices, thus rendering them ineffective for the body. To this end, IPS is able to provide gastroresistant microcapsules that overcome these problems. They are produced through the microencapsulation technique with a gastroresistant membrane that is able to improve the bioavailability of the active ingredients.

Bioavailability refers to the rate and effectiveness with which a substance is absorbed by the body. Many supplements are ineffective due to inadequate absorption and, in the worst case, can damage the gastric mucosa. The gastroresistance of active ingredients that is achieved by microencapsulation is the ideal solution to this problem. In fact, the polymeric membrane which the microcapsules provided by IPS are coated with allows for the active ingredient to be conveyed directly into the intestine, avoiding its release into the stomach.

The gastroresistance of nutraceuticals is an important milestone for the production of controlled release supplements. In fact, the absorption of the active ingredients by the intestinal mucosa allows for a higher stability of the therapeutic effect.

We can therefore conclude that microencapsulation with gastroresistant membranes optimises the bioavailability of the active ingredients of a supplement that also reach the desired body part in an effective and controlled manner. Thus, IPS is in a position to supply to its customers a great variety of gastroresistant microcapsules that are useful for the production of food and nutraceutical supplements that target every need.
