Antimicrobial Supplements

Antimicrobial supplements act as adjuvants in the treatment of infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms and are becoming an increasingly popular choice among consumers over time.

Among the most useful food supplements for this purpose, we find those based on tea tree oil, ginger and oregano. In particular, we refer to the active ingredients of these substances, capable of performing antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral functions.

One of the few disadvantages of these natural substances is their taste, which is often poorly tolerated by consumers. To overcome this discomfort, IPS has decided to exploit microencapsulation by coacervation, an innovative technique which consists in coating the active substance with a gastro-resistant polymeric membrane.

In addition to the advantages for the diffusion of the active ingredient, this polymeric membrane has the ability to mask odors and flavors, making it easier to take the supplement.

Microcapsules containing Oregano essential oil

Speaking of active ingredients, several studies have confirmed the effectiveness of natural substances such as oregano in fighting infections and inflammations. This mainly depends on the presence of active elements such as monoterpenes and phenols, in particular carvacrol and thymol.

In terms of concentration of active substance, microencapsulation can guarantee decidedly higher values than classic supplements. For example, ginger microcapsules contain an oil concentration around 80%.

Scientific research is increasingly heading towards new horizons, while trying to satisfy the needs of every consumer. The microencapsulation of natural active substances is a first step towards a way in which man and nature collaborate for a healthier and more sustainable future. It remains to be seen how antimicrobial treatments may evolve over the years to come.
