Oregano is an aromatic plant belonging to the Labiatae family, typical of European areas and often known for its use in the kitchen. Oregano essential oil, on the other hand, is widely used in phytotherapy, which is why IPS has started the production of microcapsules useful for the preparation of food supplements and nutraceuticals.

The innumerable beneficial properties of oregano oil derive from its main constituents: monoterpenes and phenols, in particular carvacrol and thymol. They are responsible for the antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties of the plant. Numerous studies also ascertain the antioxidant function of oregano essential oil, thanks to the presence of gamma-tocopherol.

Oregano essential oil is linked to the possible irritation of the gastric mucosa. However, the microencapsulated formula studied by IPS made it possible to overcome this contraindication. Through microencapsulation by coacervation, the essential oil is wrapped in a thin polymeric membrane based on animal gelatin.

This membrane has the advantage of being gastro-resistant, which is why it not only protects the active ingredient from the acid pH of the gastric mucosa but also defends the latter from possible irritations. The active substance is thus conveyed directly to the intestine where it is released in a controlled manner. This process guarantees maximum stability of the oregano essential oil and favours its correct absorption by the body.

The oregano essential oil microcapsules, specifically designed to allow the formulation of solid oral forms (hard capsules, dispersible single-dose sachets) have dimensions between 100 and 600 µm, with an oil content of up to 85%. Despite these high concentration values, the smell and taste of oregano essential oil are much weakened. This is possible thanks to the characteristics of the polymeric membrane, which perfectly isolates the essential oil eliminating any possible disturbance from the consumers.
