Lavander oil microcapsules for the production of food supplements

Lavender is a plant very commonto the Mediterranean regions, known for its characteristic smell and its beneficial properties. In addition to being widely used to produce soaps and herbal teas, lavender now offers a wide range of uses in the food and nutraceutical supplements sector. Lavender microcapsules manufactured by IPS  are a cutting-edge product, capable of getting the most out of the plant’s active ingredients.

Lavender essential oil, used to produce dry microcapsules, is extracted from the plant’s flowers and contains most of its active ingredients. Among these, we find linalool (20-50%) and linalyl acetate (20-30%), as well as various other minor terpenic derivatives. Thanks to their unique formulation, lavender microcapsules have an oil content varying from 75% to 85%.

The main advantage of IPS lavender microcapsules is actually the process by which they are made: microencapsulation by coacervation. This process consists of coating the raw material with a thin polymeric membrane, which guarantees numerous benefits over the more classic formulations.

In addition to the possibility of obtaining a product with higher concentrations of active ingredients, the use of microcapsules enables the flavours and odours to be masked. Specifically, in the case of lavender, it is possible to mask its typically bitter taste.

Another advantage of lavender essential oil microcapsules is their controlled release within the gastro-intestinal tract. The polymeric membrane is designed to withstand high pH levels, allowing the active substance to be released only under conditions that are favourable to a good absorption into the bloodstream.

Finally, it should be noted that thanks to their small size, lavender microcapsules can be used for the preparation of hard capsules, dispersible single-dose sachets and single-dose vials with proportioner cap.
