Microencapsulation by coacervation

Microencapsulation is a process that allows certain substances to be coated with a thin membrane in order to produce small capsules with uses in numerous fields of application. There are many different microencapsulation methods, both for solids and liquids, however the method that obtains the highest concentration is microencapsulation by coacervation.

This technique is made up of three distinct steps. The first involves the formation of three immiscible chemical phases: the solvent, the core material and the coating material.

The second step in microencapsulation by coacervation is the deposition of the coating onto the active substance. To do this, the solvent is mixed with the active ingredient, so that it can then be enclosed within the coating material. This is done through a process of precipitating tiny droplets of coating material on the surface of the newly created solution.

Finally there is the third step consisting in the solidification of the coating. There are three possible methods to this process: cross-linking, thermal solidification or evaporative solidification. Subsequently, microcapsules of dimensions between 1 µm and 1000 µm are obtained and can be used in the pharmaceutical, industrial and food sectors.

The main advantage of microencapsulation by coacervation is the possibility of transforming immiscible or volatile liquid substances into small solid particles. Another important aspect of this process is the ability to control the three phases, namely their pH, temperature and pressure. This not only means that a constant and even thickness of coating can be obtained, but also that the product interacts with the organism in an efficient manner.

Microencapsulation by coacervation allows for the creation of specific coatings for distinct uses, facilitating the release of the active substance only under certain conditions of pH, pressure or temperature.
