Transformation from liquid to solid: greater fluidity and better runnability

Microencapsulation by coacervation is an innovative process that allows both liquid and solid substances to be encased by a very thin polymer membrane. This membrane, made from edible gelatine (either porcine or bovine), has the role of protecting the active ingredient from degradation and interaction with external agents. In addition to this primary function, the polymer coating has another important purpose: to provide the product with an improved runnability and fluidity.

To better understand these two advantages, it is useful to be reminded of the process of microencapsulation by coacervation used by IPS for the development of microcapsules containing high concentrations of active ingredients and how it works. This technique enables the polymeric coating to precipitate over a droplet of substance, in a process similar to that of forming a crystal within a supersaturated solution.

This encapsulating process not only allows us to isolate the active ingredient until its controlled release, but also to obtain high-density spherical microcapsules capable of being stored in smaller containers. This results in the substance’s improved runnability as well as advantages related to the product’s packaging, storage, transport and marketing.

The formation of spherical microcapsules with optimal dimensions between 100 and 600 microns has an additional advantage: fluidity. In fact, the decreased rate of surface interaction between microspheres, due to the make-up of and the process of forming the polymeric coating, leads to a better runnability in the final product. This runnability, also known as fluidity, is fundamental for the consumption by customers as well as for a better packaging process by suppliers.

In conclusion, the use of the microencapsulation by coacervation technique for the production of food supplements is incredibly beneficial not only for consumers but also for suppliers.
