Food supplements with star anise

Star anise cultivation originated in China, where for thousands of years it has been used for its medicinal and aromatic properties. Today we can find numerous scientific studies confirming the benefits of star anise for our health. For example, this essential oil has digestive and carminative properties, which is why it is often used for the production of food supplements.

Its properties derive mostly from its main component: trans-anethole. This substance, in addition to being a natural digestive aid, is also a highly effective remedy to combat the loss of appetite. Moreover, star anise essential oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidising, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Consumers use this ingredient mainly to face respiratory issues, such as asthma and bronchitis.

If consumed in large quantities, this ingredient can cause stomach problems.

Dry microcapsules produced by IPS, however, help prevent these undesired side effects.

Microcapsules containing Star Anise essential oil

Microcapsules produced by coacervation actually protect the essential oil within a membrane that can also be gastro-resistant, for a controlled release. Thanks to this feature, despite their high concentration of essential oil (75-85%), microcapsules of star anise provoke remarkably fewer side effects.

A further advantage attributed to the use of microencapsulation is the masking of smells and flavours. Star anise comes with a rather distinct and intense flavour that can become unpleasant, especially if taken daily. The polymer membrane of IPS microcapsules guarantees the delivery of the substance directly to the gastrointestinal tract, with limited interaction with the taste buds.

Dry star anise microcapsules are recommended for the production of solid oral forms, such as rigid capsules and single-dose orodispersible sachets. Indeed, the dosage is calculated according to the intended properties of the food supplement.
